Caprese Salad

Sometimes nothing quite hits the spot like a traditional Caprese Salad. The flavor of this recipe depends entirely on your choice of tomatoes. For a classic Caprese, go for full-flavored Romas. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, try Cocktail tomatoes. And if you prefer tangy, opt for an heirloom variety!

INGREDIENTS

3 large tomatoes, sliced
8 ounces mozzarella, sliced
¼ cup fresh basil leaves
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon balsamic reduction or balsamic glaze
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Place a slice of tomato on a serving platter, then layer a slice of mozzarella cheese on top, just slightly to the side. Alternate layers of tomato and mozzarella slices until both ingredients are gone and you’ve formed a spiral.
2. Arrange the fresh basil leaves between the tomato and cheese slices.
3. Pour the olive oil and balsamic reduction over the Caprese salad, then sprinkle the salt and pepper on top. Serve immediately.
